telemetry using gsm modem and 8051

i have a 8051 development board with a serial port and a gsm modem.. i went through several posts in this forum and learnt a bit about at commands to send an sms from the modem.. i wish to write a code to interface 8051 with the modem for sending an sms.. i am new to 8051 and would like to know about the parameters i have to study in order to write this code.. someone pls help me out..
